RCMP crime prevention tips for business and home owners
Over the past month St. Albert RCMP has seen an increase in business and residential break & enters and want to educate owners while keeping in mind the principals of Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED). CPTED is a crime prevention theory focusing on tactical design and the effective use of the built environment, which when applied, reduces both crime and the fear of crime.
St. Albert RCMP offer the following tips to business owners:
- Install motion sensor lights
- Keep an inside light on at all times
- Install video cameras
- Install an alarm system
- Keep windows clear of stickers, posters and high display cases
- Trim bushes/trees under windows to create clear sightlines
- Keep valuables away from the windows
- Do not leave money in register at night and leave the register drawer open
- Install roll shutters or bars on windows
- Install bollards (ram pillars) in front of business
- Remove items that could be used to climb onto the roof
St. Albert RCMP offer the following tips to home owners:
- Install an alarm system
- Install doorbell cameras or video cameras around your property
- Turn on outside lights in the evening and install motion sensor lights
- Lock the front door even when you are inside or outside in the back yard
- Ask a neighbour to take care of the of your property & take in papers if you plan to be away
- Use indoor light timers in the evening when you are not home
- Clear snow and trim trees & bushes around the home – clear sight lines
- Ensure bicycles, scooters and other outdoor valuables are put away (locked up) when not in use
- Engrave and/or record identifying marks/numbers/serial numbers on bikes, tools, electronics and other valuable items
Similar to the above tips, St. Albert RCMP follow #9PMRoutine / Lock It – Crime Reduction initiatives.
Every night at 9 PM:
- Remove valuables from your vehicle and ensure it’s locked, windows are closed, and if possible, park vehicles in a garage
- Close all garage windows and lock any garage doors, especially those leading into your house
- Keep your vehicle registration and insurance documents secure - documents can be used to commit other crimes
- Check and lock all house doors and shut all windows
- Turn on an exterior light
- Close and lock your fence gate
- Lock your outdoor shed
- Put away bikes and valuables in your yard
Everyone has a role to play in keeping our community safe. If you see something or feel something is suspicious, do not assume someone else has reported it, write it down and call the police.
St. Albert RCMP encourage the public to report any criminal or suspicious activity to the RCMP Detachment at 780-458-7700. Reports tell us where to look, who to look for, and where to patrol in the future. If you see a crime in progress, dial 911.
