St. Albert RCMP are asking for the help of all residents who own utility or RV trailers or motorhomes to practice crime reduction techniques this summer season. Earlier in the year, St. Albert RCMP have had 2 reports of Alberta license plates being stolen from trailers. These plates were then attached to trailers that are believed to be stolen and were noticed on photo radar speeding in the region. Overnight between 6 pm on June 7 and 1:30 pm on June 8, 2018, someone stole a battery from a utility trailer parked in front of a residence on Doucette Place in St. Albert.
Crime Reduction techniques that could prevent trailer theft and theft from RVs include:
- attach the license plates to the trailer or motorhome with free tamper proof license plate screws available through St. Albert Neighbourhood Watch. To arrange for installation of these screws, e-mail info@eyewatch.info.
- mount motion sensor lights over your trailer parking area that will warn you of suspicious activity around your parked trailer.
- Lock your trailer doors and storage compartments when camping and when parked at home.
- Shut your RV windows and close the curtains or blinds on your motorhome or RV.
- Invest in a hitch lock, wheel lock or wheel boot and then faithfully use them. Your local RV dealer can provide guidance about the best kinds.
- Don't store expensive items such as laptops, cameras, gaming consoles or jewellery in your RV. Consider buying a safe if you need to bring expensive items in your RV.
- Park your trailer or motorhome in populated areas where your neighbours can help keep an eye on your property.
- Increase your chances of your neighbours watching out for you. Get to know them by holding a St. Albert Block Party. Visit https://stalbert.ca/city/csd/neighbourhoods/parties/ to learn how.
When the community and the RCMP work together, there is the greatest chance of reducing crime in our city.
