RCMP Motorcycle Safety
On April 9, 2021 @ approximately 6:40 p.m., St. Albert RCMP responded to their first motorcycle collision of the season on Lester Crescent. The motorcyclist was cut off by a truck, hit the curb and fell off the bike onto the road. The motorcyclist sustained non-life threatening injuries and transported to hospital by ground ambulance.
St. Albert RCMP remind all drivers to share the road safely with motorcycles. Motorcycle crashes peak in the summer as warmer weather and conditions bring more riders onto the road. Motorcycles are smaller than passenger vehicles, harder to see and do not offer the protection of a frame, seatbelts or airbags.
To help prevent a crash with a motorcycle, drivers should follow these tips:
- Scan intersections carefully and take an extra moment to look for motorcycles when turning left.
- Stay alert and avoid distractions that take your mind off driving or your eyes off the road.
- Allow at least three or four seconds of following distance when travelling behind a motorcycle and plenty of lane space when you pass.
- Be ready to yield as a motorcycle is often closer than it seems. Remember it can be hard to tell how fast they are travelling.
Motorcyclists should follow basic safety tips to reduce chances of crashing or being seriously injured:
- Practice emergency braking and obstacle avoidance.
- Be seen - do your best to stay out of a driver's blind spot.
- Watch drivers for clues - never assume they have seen you or will give you the right-of-way, they may not accurately judge your distance or speed.
- Use your signals - let drivers know what you plan to do so they can anticipate your next move and react in time.
- Plan your path prior to a curve.
- Ride at a safe speed.
St. Albert RCMP encourage the public to report any criminal or suspicious activity to the RCMP Detachment at 780-458-7700. Reports tell us where to look, who to look for, and where to patrol in the future. If you see a crime in progress, dial 911.
