RCMP remind motorists to re-new their registration
Since the elimination of licence plate validation stickers and letters that were once mailed out by Alberta Registration, reminding motorists of registration renewal, St. Albert RCMP has seen a substantial increase in the number of vehicles being driven with expired registration/license plates.
In Alberta, there is no grace period provided for vehicle registration renewal. Once your registration expires, your vehicle is considered to have invalid registration, leaving you vulnerable to potential fines such as:
- Operating a motor vehicle without valid registration – Section 52(1)(a) Traffic Safety Act – fine $324.00
- Operate a motor vehicle with an expired license plate – Section 53(1)(c) Traffic Safety Act – fine $324.00
Along with the violation ticket, driver’s vehicle can be towed by police. The onus is on the driver of the vehicle to ensure registration is valid.
St. Albert RCMP are reminding motorists to check their registration document to ensure that it is valid. Motorists are able to check the status of their vehicle registration in person at any Alberta Registries Office or by going online to Alberta’s Online Registry Service (e-regisrty.ca). The online Alberta Registry Service also allows motorists to sign up for “Vehicle Registration Renewal Reminders.”
