RCMP Urges the Public to Report Aggressive and Dangerous Driving
The St. Albert RCMP is reminding motorists to drive safely and responsibly to help keep Alberta’s roads free from aggressive and dangerous driving.
In 2024, the Alberta RCMP laid 9,419 charges related to aggressive and dangerous driving. Reckless behaviors such as excessive speeding, distracted driving, tailgating, and road rage not only put drivers at risk but also endanger pedestrians and other road users.
To help prevent aggressive driving incidents and ensure safer roads, the St. Albert RCMP encourages motorists to keep the following tips in mind:
- Plan ahead and reduce stress by allowing extra time for your commute and anticipating potential delays.
- Drive within posted speed limits and make sure to adjust your driving for various road conditions.
- Practice patience and follow traffic laws, respect other drivers, and avoid engaging in risky maneuvers.
- Stay calm in tense situations. If you witness aggressive driving, do not respond with aggressive behavior — avoid escalating the situation.
- Always remember to keep your distance. If you are being tailgated or confronted by an aggressive driver, do not engage.
- If another driver confronts you, lock your doors, remain in your vehicle, and leave when safe to do so.
- If you are being followed do not drive home. Instead, proceed to the nearest police station or a safe, populated area and call the police.
- If you witness an incident, try to note key details, such as the vehicle’s color, make, model, and license plate number, as well as a description of the driver. Report the incident to the police as soon as possible.
- If you or someone else is in immediate danger due to an aggressive driver, call 911 immediately.
