RCMP provide safety tips while enjoying the outdoors alone
Many citizens head out alone daily to walk, run or bike as part of their workout routine or to enjoy the outdoors in one of the many green spaces/trail systems St. Albert has to offer, but when you are alone, you may look like an easier target. St. Albert RCMP want to provide citizens some tips to keep you safe and confident when heading outside by yourself:
- Stick to well populated, well-lit areas. Avoid hidden trails or short cuts through secluded areas, vary your route (do not be predictable) and wear reflective clothing at night.
- Carry a cell phone for 911 and other minor emergencies (ensure sufficient battery life).
- Avoid wearing headphones/ear buds. Shutting yourself off from the rest of the world makes it very easy for an individual to sneak up on you.
- Do not be distracted by making and taking calls, text, or social media posts, this makes you an easy target.
- Keep your head up and look confident, posture can make all the difference in how you are perceived by an unknown individual.
- Avoid a person or a situation which does not feel safe. It is okay to say no or tell the person to clearly leave you alone and walk away.
St. Albert RCMP and Municipal Enforcement regularly patrol parks and green spaces, either in marked vehicles, golf carts or bike patrols, to help ensure public safety.
If you are or have been out alone enjoying the outdoors and encounter something or someone that does not feel right, St. Albert RCMP encourage you to report the suspicious or criminal activity to the RCMP Detachment at 780-458-7700.
Reports tell us where to look, who to look for, and where to patrol in the future. If you see a crime in progress, dial 911. If you wish to remain anonymous, contact Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS), online at www.P3Tips.com or by using the “P3 Tips” app available through the Apple App or Google Play Store.
