RCMP encourages residents to take precautions ahead of potential flooding
As warmer temperatures arrive, St. Albert RCMP is reminding residents to take proactive steps to prepare for potential flooding. Seasonal changes, including heavy rainfall and rapid snowmelt, can increase the risk of localized flooding, particularly in areas that have experienced high water levels in previous years.
To help residents stay safe and protect their properties St. Albert RCMP offers the following flood preparedness tips:
- Monitor local weather alerts and emergency notifications for potential flood risks in your area.
- Have essentials such as bottled water, non-perishable food, medications, flashlights, batteries, and important documents in a waterproof container.
- Clear eavestroughs, ensure sump pumps are functioning, and move valuable items to higher levels of your home.
- Identify a safe route and ensure all household members know where to go in case of an evacuation.
- Never attempt to walk or drive through flooded roadways, as water depth and currents can be unpredictable.
- Listen to local authorities for updates and evacuation instructions if necessary.
- If you experience an emergency due to flooding, call 911.
