RCMP remind motorists of small vehicle rules and regulations
As the weather begins to warm and more seasonal vehicles take to the roads, the St. Albert RCMP would like to remind the public of traffic safety rules and regulations for various small vehicle types.
As smaller, electric-powered vehicles become increasingly popular for commuting and recreation, it’s important for all road users to understand how these vehicles are classified and what rules apply to them. Whether you’re riding an e-bike, moped, or electric scooter, knowing the regulations can help prevent accidents, injuries, and fines.
- Electric motorcycles or mopeds: These vehicles are not permitted on sidewalks or in bike lanes and must stay on the far right of any road, except when turning left. Operators must have a license, registration, and insurance (Government of Alberta, 2018).
- Electric power assist bicycles: These vehicles are permitted in bike lanes or must stay on the far right of any road, except when turning left. Operators do not require a license, registration, or insurance (Government of Alberta, 2018).
- Electric scooters: Legislation for rented or shared electric scooters varies between municipalities. Please refer to your city’s specific laws and guidelines. Operators do not require a license, insurance, or registration. Personal e-scooters may only be used on private property (Government of Alberta, 2018).
- Off-road or all-terrain vehicles: These vehicles are not permitted on public roadways or in ditches unless granted specific permissions. Operators must have registration and insurance. A license is only required if operators are permitted to drive on roadways (Government of Alberta, 2018).
